'ADOPT
A PONY' AT ‘SUNDAY FUNDAY’ EVENT
PAEKAKARIKI,
Wellington - JULY 14, 2008 — It will be big, bright and busy on
Sunday 27th July at the ‘SUNDAY FUNDAY’ event at the Kapiti
Coast Electric Tramway site at MacKays Crossing, Queen Elizabeth Park.
This months theme will be based around early transport and in particular,
horses. The Stables on the Park will be running an "Adopt a Pony"
day where children can learn all about how to care for ponys and horses
and get the opportunity to take care of a pony for a period of time.
‘Harriette the Clown’ and her magic show will start around
midday and heaps more fun on a bouncy castle are all in store for young
children. This is all in addition to the regular selection of market
and hot food stalls and of course, the horse and tram rides.
“The museum is raising funds and one of the aims is to finance
a new building and development programme,” says Graeme Moffatt
secretary of the Wellington Tramway Museum. “The tramway is in
the process of revamping its museum display as well as constructing
a new storage building to protect some of its valuable heritage trams
from the elements. We are also in the process of planning the restoration
of Wellington’s oldest surviving tramcar and an extension of the
tram line to the southern entrance of QE Park at Paekakariki. It is
anticipated that the total cost of the overall project will be in the
vicinity of $4,000,000”
Mr Moffatt commented that the museum is totally voluntary and has been
operating every weekend and public holiday for just over forty years
and the move to a seven day operation is a bold move.
“With the solid growth in the number of visitors over the past
couple of years, we are planning for full time operation around the
end of the year. The running of the regular ‘Sunday Funday’
monthly events as well as the ‘Anything Vintage Festival’
just after Christmas, will go a long way towards helping to finance
the increased costs as the museum receives no regular funding apart
from its own weekend operations,” said Mr Moffatt.
Local schools and community groups are welcome to free stall sites and
there is still room for local enterprises and crafts people to book
a stall site for $15.00.
Entry to the ‘SUNDAY FUNDAY’ event is free and it runs from
10am to 3pm at the Tramway Museum at MacKay’s Crossing, Queen
Elizabeth Park just north of Paekakariki.
