ANYTHING VINTAGE FESTIVAL PROMISES TO BE BIGGER AND BETTER

PAEKAKARIKI, Wellington - June 14, 2009— Bigger and better is the promise for the fourth ‘Anything Vintage Festival’ returning to just inside Queen Elizabeth Park’s MacKays Crossing entrance, just after Christmas this year.

Following on from last years very successful event, the festival will run from Sunday 27th to Tuesday 29th December. Starting each day at 10am and running until 4.30pm, a wide variety of entertainment, rides, food, displays, market stalls and outdoor activities catering for all ages are on offer.

Graeme Moffatt, Wellington Tramway Museum secretary and one of the organisers of the event, says “the ‘Anything Vintage Festival’ is themed around transport, machinery and other equipment from yesteryear and has become a mecca for anyone interested in how things were done in a bygone era. Vintage machinery clubs from as far afield as Taranaki will be operating a wide range of old stationery engines rescued from many a farm. Displays of a selection of vintage cars and buses along with military vehicles in addition to pony and buggy rides by ‘Stables on the Park’, helicopter rides and of course the Tramways own heritage Wellington trams will be operating between MacKays Crossing and Whareroa Beach”.

Mr Moffatt went on to say that to complete the vintage transport experience, Tranz Metro will be running their restored 1954 English Electric Suburban Unit from Wellington to Paraparaumu along with other normally timetabled trains. Connecting with the hourly train services, passengers can experience a ride to and from and the festival in a vintage bus, including the Wellington based London double decker bus ‘English Rose’.

For those not into history, this year’s festival will again feature live music by top Kapiti bands.
There will be an indoor display that will include aviation and maritime artifacts along with a selection of model railways and some of the tramways non-operational trams and the tramways ‘King Kong’ tram theatre will feature a number of early New Zealand movies” said Mr Moffatt.

“The large market area offers a variety of stalls to shop at along with fair ground rides and attractions plus a great range of hot and cold food including real fruit ice cream, espresso coffee, hot dogs, sausage sizzle and more. The organisers are also pleased to be able to announce that a large contingent from the ‘Gypsy Travellers’ travelling fair will there during the three days of the festival”.

Supported by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and many local community groups, the ‘Anything Vintage Festival’ also offers the opportunity for people to explore and experience the unique coastal environment of Queen Elizabeth Park at the beach and on the many walkways around the park.

The ‘Anything Vintage Festival’ is a primary fund-raiser for the  Kapiti Coast Electric Tramway’s continued development of the tramway and museum and the society is keen for other groups within the Kapiti community to participate and benefit from this growing annual event.

Some stall sites both outside and in a large marquee are still available at reasonable rates with sites for charities, community groups and societies available at no charge.
